✦ What is FitFutures?

FitFutures — Specialist Trainer Pathways is UKFI's placement programme for the next generation of fitness professionals. Over 12–18 weeks in a real gym, you'll build the experience, commercial skills and confidence that separate working trainers from certificate holders.

You won't just attend a placement. You'll learn how to create opportunity, help a facility grow, retain members, win back ex-members, book consultations, follow up professionally, sell ethically — and keep going when the first answer is no.

The FitFutures app is how you run your placement. It tracks your weekly numbers, holds your evidence portfolio, keeps your business milestones moving, and gives you a personal AI accountability coach who reads your actual results every week and tells you — honestly — what to do next.

Programme status: FitFutures — Specialist Trainer Pathways is an endorsed continuing professional development (CPD) and placement evidence programme. It is not a regulated qualification. Completion confirms you have completed the programme requirements and evidence portfolio, subject to UKFI review and sign-off.

✦ How the app works: your weekly rhythm

1. Log your week. Every week, enter your real numbers: placement hours, study hours, member conversations, ex-member contacts, retention saves, campaign touches, tasters booked and consultations. It takes two minutes.

2. Your coach responds. The moment you submit, your AI accountability coach reads your numbers against your targets — this week's and your overall pace — and gives you a direct, personal response. On track? It pushes you to the next step. Behind? It tells you exactly where, and gives you one specific action to fix it. No fluff, no empty praise.

3. Work your units. Six programme units cover everything from gym-floor professionalism to running your own campaigns and events. Tick off tasks as you complete them and photograph your evidence as you go.

4. Build your business. Your Start Your Business tracker follows the real milestones — insurance, pricing, your first taster, your first paying client. The coach nudges you on these as you get closer to qualifying, because the goal isn't just a certificate. It's clients.

5. Miss a week? The app notices. If you haven't logged by Monday morning, you'll get a reminder. Your placement coordinator sees your progress too. Nobody falls through the cracks — that's the point.

✦ The six units

Your placement is structured around six units. Five are mandatory; one is optional depending on your facility. Every unit has a task checklist and an evidence checklist in the app — complete the tasks, upload the evidence, get your supervisor's sign-off where required.

Unit 1 — Gym Duties and Professional Facility Practice

MANDATORY · 12–20 HOURS

Develop reliable, safe and commercially aware day-to-day gym practice through supervised placement duties. Cleaning records, equipment checks, member interaction, sales support — the professional foundations.

Unit 2 — Shadowing Personal Training and Specialist Practice

MANDATORY · 8–12 HOURS

Develop practical insight by observing competent practitioners and reflecting on professional practice. You'll shadow at least four PT sessions plus one specialist session, and turn what you see into your own future practice.

Unit 3 — Social Media and Member Communication Practice

MANDATORY · 6–10 HOURS

Build practical marketing and communication skills that support retention, recruitment and reactivation. You'll plan and deliver three real, facility-approved campaigns — one for retention, one for recruitment, one to re-engage ex-members.

Unit 4 — PR, Community or Facility Event Project

MANDATORY · 8–15 HOURS

Develop project planning, community engagement and promotional skills by organising and delivering a facility-approved event — from proposal and sign-off through delivery and evaluation.

Unit 5 — Consultation, Sales Tracking and Professional Progression

MANDATORY · 3–6 HOURS

Develop confidence in the professional consultation journey, sales tracking and readiness for qualified PT practice. Track your enquiries and consultations, and — where you're qualified or nearly qualified — book real taster consultations.

Unit 6 — New Member Induction and Bespoke Programme Practice

OPTIONAL — FACILITY DEPENDENT · 4–8 HOURS

Understand and practise high-quality new member induction and basic programme design, where this is part of your host facility's process.

✦ Evidence: photograph it as you go

Your evidence portfolio lives in the app. Upload photos and documents against each task the day you do them.

Do not leave it all until the end — that is how good portfolios become archaeological digs.
  • Authentic — your work, or a truthful record of your own involvement
  • Sufficient — enough detail that UKFI and your supervisor can see what you actually did
  • Current — from your current FitFutures placement
  • Relevant — clearly linked to the unit and task
  • Safe and lawful — respects health and safety, GDPR, facility policy, confidentiality and your competence boundaries

Anonymise member and client information unless you have written permission. Never work outside your qualification, competence, insurance or facility approval.

✦ How you pass (and what you get)

1. Complete your units. All mandatory tasks done, evidence uploaded, supervisor sign-offs collected.

2. Hit your numbers. Across the placement: 102 placement hours, 51 study hours, 170 member conversations, 170 ex-member contacts, 34 retention saves, 85 campaign touches, 17 tasters booked, 17 consultations. That sounds like a lot. Broken into weeks — around 6 placement hours, 3 study hours, 10 conversations — it's simply consistent work. Low numbers are not failure if they're honest and followed by action. No numbers, no follow-up and no reflection is the problem.

3. Submit your final reflection in the app when your placement ends.

4. UKFI review. Your tutor reviews your full portfolio and records a decision: Pass or Refer. A Refer isn't the end — you'll get feedback, and you can strengthen your evidence and resubmit.

5. Your certificate. A Pass triggers your FitFutures completion certificate — endorsed CPD recognition that sits alongside the regulated qualifications you're working toward, and evidence to any employer that you didn't just study fitness. You practised it, in a real facility, with real members and real numbers.

The bigger prize: by the time you pass, you'll have run campaigns, delivered an event, tracked a sales pipeline, practised consultations and ticked off the milestones of starting your own business — insurance, pricing, social presence, first paying client. The placement doesn't just prepare you for the industry. It starts your business while you're still in it.

✦ The standard

We'll be straight with you, because your coach will be too:

  • Turn up on time, prepared, in suitable uniform and ready to work.
  • Record your activity honestly. Inflated numbers are worse than low numbers, because they hide the real problem.
  • Follow up professionally. A lead is not a lead until it has been recorded and followed up.
  • Use initiative. If the gym is quiet — find a task, help a member, clean, learn, shadow, call, message or plan.
  • Respect data protection, confidentiality, safeguarding, health and safety and your facility's rules.
  • Accept that rejection is normal. Sales is a skill. Repetition beats excuses.

Posting once is not a campaign. Asking once is not follow-up. Wanting clients is not the same as building a pipeline. The app exists to help you do the work — every week, on the record, until it's a habit.

✦ Questions

Is this an App Store app?
No download from the App Store needed — FitFutures installs straight from your browser and works exactly like an app once it's on your home screen. It's free.
I signed up but my dashboard says I'm awaiting enrolment.
That's normal — your tutor activates your placement after you sign up, usually within one working day. If it's been longer, contact your UKFI tutor.
What if I have a quiet week?
Log it honestly. Your coach responds to real numbers — a low week followed by action beats an inflated one every time. Your coordinator would rather help you early than discover a problem at week twelve.
Who sees my progress?
You, your UKFI tutor/assessor, and your placement coordinator. Your supervisor at the facility signs off evidence. Progress summaries help your coordinator support you — they're not there to catch you out.
What phone do I need?
Any modern iPhone or Android. iPhone users: use Safari to install. Android users: use Chrome.
