Welcome to the level 3 Exercise Referral qualification.

To be eligible to study this course you need to have already completed either the level 2 in Gym Instructing and/or the personal training diploma/certificate. You may also be eligible if you hold a similar qualification specific to the fitness industry.

On this course, you will be studying various units, from anatomy and physiology (if you don’t hold the personal training qualification as a minimium), roles and responsibilities in exercise referral, medical conditions and subsequent medications, side effects and how to programme effectively, national regulations and more.

As this course is mostly theory based, you are able to complete all your studies using this platform along with guidance from your dedicated tutor and learner support assistant. You will be required to demonstrate delivery of your programme to us, which can either be done at one of our facilities or via video link/pre-recorded submission subject to prior approval from us and Focus Awards.

On this platform you will have all of the resources needed to complete the qualification, including your LAW (Learner Assessment Workbook) and a guide to medical conditions that we suggest you download and save for future reference. The exercise referral qualification is an in-depth course that will open your eyes to a variety of medical conditions, their pathophysiology, costs to the nation and treatment methods.

Perhaps one of the most important lessons to learn from this course is the importance of taking into account the multitude of implications on your programming when considering the medical condition itself, the medications being taken and the side effects of each medication. These factors alone can result in signigifant changes to your programming due to the limitations each can impose. Not to mention the complex interplay between multiple medications and the medical conditions themselves!

This is a fascinating course. Nevertheless, it also comes with hard work and diligent study required. Although we will support you through your studies, it is ultimately your responsibility to be a motivated, diligent and organised as a learner. Although you’ll be provided with all the resources you need, it is advised and encouraged that you engage in some outside reading and where relevant, you reference any reading in your work.

And finally – we hope you enjoy your studies on this fascinating course!
